City & Guilds 2396-01 Course Design and Verification of Electrical Installations

Course Duration: 7 days plus exam

The City & Guilds 2396-01 Design and Verification course is the replacement for the 2400 qualification.  To more accurately reflect its status in the industry and its technical content, the qualification has now been upgraded to a Level 4 Award.

This qualification helps develop those essential, up-to-date knowledge and techniques needed to professionally design and install electrical systems.

This comprehensive theory-based qualification will give candidates an improved knowledge and understanding of:

  • Specifying and planning electrical installations
  • Circuit design
  • Selection and erection of equipment
  • Verification of electrical installations
  • The course is theory-based and will be delivered through worked examples, reference to appropriate standards, tutor presentation and group discussion.  The delivery programme will prepare candidates for the written examination and also give the required knowledge and skills to enable candidates to complete the design project.

2396-01 Who is it suitable for?

  • Electricians wishing to broaden their career prospects
  • Supervisors, project managers and engineers
  • Others in the industry wishing to improve their technical knowledge with respect to the design and verification of electrical installations

2396-01 Course entry requirements?

  • A pre-requisite for this course is that candidates have a strong electrical background.  Ideally candidates should have qualifications such as 17th Edition and Level 3 Inspection and Testing.

What is the assessment for City & Guilds 2396-01?

To achieve the 2396-01 Design qualification you will need to complete two assessments:

  • 40 hour design project (Unit 401)
    • You will be issued with a real-life scenario around which you will design a full electrical installation. This will include full size layout drawings and installation specifications.  You will start to develop this project during the course and will be required to submit it at a predetermined date. Course attendance is split so that you have time to learn the required skills, gain support from your tutor and then submit for an assessment decision.
  • Written examination (Unit 402)
    • City & Guilds make this exam available three times a year at set dates.  On completion papers are sent to City & Guilds for marking and results may take up to 45 working days.  The exam is always started at 6.30 pm on a Thursday evening:
    • Duration: 3 hours
    • Number of questions: 6
    • Question type: Detailed written answers
    • Permitted reference materials: BS7671, Guidance Notes 3 & Onsite Guide
    • Other allowed materials/equipment: Pens with blue or black ink, and a non-programmable calculator
    • This exam is open book so you will be able to reference to ‘clean’ copies of the listed publications

2396-01 Questions and Answers:

What happens if I fail an assessment?

You will have a very good chance of passing your assessments at the first attempt as these courses are very thorough and our tutors are there to guide and support you.  If it doesn’t go right for you on the day the main thing, is not to worry – it happens from time to time.  Your tutor will review your score with you and you may just need to review your notes again and sit the exam a couple of days later.  This is often all that’s needed.  If you and your tutor feel you need a little more support we can agree some extra 1-1 training for you.  Whatever happens we want you to enjoy our courses and come away with the qualification that you wanted.  Our tutors and staff will always be there to support and advise you.
