What will I learn:
The avoidance of underground services is a requirement for anyone who is penetrating the ground for any reason.
Cable avoidance tools are becoming more sophisticated with each passing year, however the user of this equipment must be able to understand the basic principles and its correct use as well as its limitations in order to maximise its effectiveness.
This course will introduce you to both the theoretical and practical side of this subject.
The course commences by looking at both legislation and published guidance available on the subject of the identification and avoidance of underground services; at what is or is not locatable.
Preparatory research of maps is covered, along with examples of streetworks and site surveys. The course explains the various detection modes and details the location techniques necessary for a methodical and safe CAT survey.
This course will give delegates a clear understanding of the importance of a methodical approach to the surveying and locating of underground services, along with the correct operation of cable avoidance tools and signal generators in their various modes of operation.

- Safe systems of work - inc. planning, detecting, identifying & marking underground services, plus safe excavation
- Preparatory work - inc. ground survey & visual site survey, risk assessment & user checks on the cable avoidance tool prior to use

- Explanation of operating modes - inc. passive location & active location
- Location techniques - inc. the sweep search process, pinpointing, trial holes. Determination of direction of the utility & nulling out
