Megger TXL890 Extra Load Unit for TORKEL Battery Test Systems
Megger TXL890 has been designed for use with Megger TORKEL Battery Load Testers to provide higher load currents for use in constant current or constant power tests. Together they form a system which can discharge batteries with currents of up to several kA. TXL extra loads are connected directly to the battery, and TORKEL measures the total current using a clamp-on ammeter.
Megger TXL890 Key Features:
- Provide higher load currents for concurrent power tests
- Discharging process controlled by a TORKEL unit
- Connect directly to the battery under test

Why You May Need the Megger TXL-Series Extra Load Units
When it comes to battery capacity testing, the Megger TORKEL 900-series is already a powerful and flexible solution. However, certain battery systems, especially those in high-capacity or long-duration applications, demand more from a load tester than the base unit can deliver. This is where the Megger TXL-series extra load units come in. These purpose-built extensions allow you to increase the discharge capacity of your TORKEL, making it possible to perform faster tests, work with larger battery banks, and carry out more comprehensive system validation.
1. Handling Larger Battery Banks
The standard TORKEL 910 can provide up to 110 A of discharge current, while the 930 and 950 deliver up to 220 A. For many field applications, this is sufficient. In environments with large battery banks such as transmission substations, data centres, power plants, and rail systems, the internal capacity of the TORKEL may not be enough to reach the required load. TXL units link directly with the TORKEL to extend its current and power range, allowing you to test much larger systems without splitting the bank into smaller sections.
2. Reducing Test Time
Even when the base TORKEL could technically meet your load requirement, it might need to run for hours to complete the test. Adding one or more TXL units increases the available load and allows the discharge process to be completed more quickly. This saves engineer time, reduces site disruption, and shortens the period in which the battery system is taken to low charge states.
3. Maintaining Test Accuracy Under Realistic Loads
The TXL-series enables you to impose a real-world operational load on the battery system in a single test pass. This is critical for compliance with standards such as IEEE and NERC PRC-005, which require capacity validation under realistic discharge conditions. The higher current ensures that voltage sag and cell behaviour are observed as they would be in an actual emergency, giving you confidence in the results.
4. Flexible and Scalable Configurations
The TXL range includes models designed for different voltage levels and load capacities, from the TXL830 at 8.3 kW to the TXL890 at 15.4 kW. They can be combined in parallel or series with the TORKEL, allowing you to tailor the setup for each job. This scalability means you can invest in the capacity you need now and expand later if your testing requirements grow.
In summary, the Megger TXL-series extra load units transform your TORKEL from a capable tester into a high-capacity, rapid-deployment load testing system. Whether you need to meet tight maintenance schedules, test massive banks in one session, or simulate demanding real-world loads, TXL units provide the power to get it done safely, accurately, and efficiently.
